  • This is a pretty heavy debate in the gardening world. The term 'heirloom' refers to something that is 'passed down for generations'. So, what does heirloom mean in terms of seeds? Heirloom seeds are tried and true varieties that have been grown for many years due to their value. To some people, heirloom varieties must be 50 to 100 years old to be considered a true heirloom. To others, it means that it is an open-pollinated, non-hybrid seed that produces crops with seed saving capabilities.

At The Aussie Seed Shed, we do a lot of research into the seed varieties that we stock for our community. We research the history of each of our seed varieties and we follow the general consenus of the science and gardening communities as to whether a seed stock is an heirloom.

We tag our seed varieties as heirlooms so our community knows that those seeds have stood the test of time. These seeds have been passed down for generations due to their resilience, crop production and/or flavour. It is also important to note that these heirloom varieties will 'breed true'. This means that the crop produced on the parent plant will be the same crop produced on the offspring. So, if you're interested in saving some seeds to get your garden growing next season, make sure you choose an heirloom variety.

  • No. Genetically modified (GMO) seeds are not available to purchase by the general public in Australia. However this is not common knowledge, so we also state our seeds are non-GMO on our product pages.

  • We currently stock a very small amount of treated seed varieties. These seeds are treated with thiram. Thiram is a fungicide that is commonly used to prevent fungal infections in the plants during the germination stage. The quantity of thiram used to treat the seeds is tiny — certainly not enough to impact the crop or any surrounding crops. Thiram cannot transfer over to your other untreated seeds.

Each product that is treated with thiram is stated on the product page and on the seed packet you recieve. You will also be able to tell your seeds have been treated because thiram is a pinky-red colour.

While it is safe to eat the produce that is grown from treated seeds, do not consume the seeds themselves (pets included).

We are looking to phase out treated seed varieties in the future.
